LB Comets v Seven Up Red

It was a cold and windy day chez Vandyke when Comets took to the court against 7Up Reds who were rather confusingly dressed in black and yellow. The game commenced with the teams evenly matched but Comets mastered the blustery conditions more quickly than 7Up. Comets picked up the pace to avoid hypothermia in the wind chill and ended the first quarter with a substantial 9 – 3 lead.

Again in the second quarter the possession seemed evenly matched, but the combination of great defensive work and accurate shooting by Comets seemed to demoralise the opposition and Comets enhanced their lead to 21 -10.

Into the third quarter and 7Up made team changes to try and contain the Comets lead. But it was a disaaaster for 7Up. Player of the Match GS Michelle Channer just kept pumping those goals in, ably supported by GA Jenny Kirn. Down the other end of the court the Defensive Duo leapt for interceptions like gazelles and with tight marking kept 7Up out of the game. Comets stormed ahead to 39 goals and a forlorn 7Up rued their decision to change their format, having scored only 1 goal in the quater.

The final quarter began, with the supporters suffering frostbite and dreaming of coffee they wondered if the dream team would keep up the standard for the final 15 minutes. Further changes were made to the 7Up line–up, would this make a difference? – nail biting stuff (for those who could feel their fingers). The supporters needn‘t have worried. Comets continued to play brilliant netball. There were lots of lovely goals and interceptions, GD Mel Smith being described by one supporter as a Tiger pouncing in front of the opposition to claim the ball. The triumphant Comets ended up victorious with a 53 – 14 win. Ahh, those chapped red legs were worth it!
