LB Comets v Eclipse Div Cup

The sun broke through as Comets took to the pitch for their Divisional Cup match against Eclipse. It was a good omen. The Comets girls felt strong and despite playing a team who were younger (aren’t they all) , taller and bouncier, the experience of the Comets squad showed and an early lead was taken. The Comets shooting pair practised their shots for a while until their aim was in and then nothing could stop them. Aided by strong defensive work Comets stormed to a 16 – 3 win in the first quarter.

As this was a Divisional Cup  match the score returned to nil for the second quarter. Eclipse made team changes bringing on a more experienced GS and moving their fastest (and pretty tall) player to Centre. Comets were unsettled to start with but not for long. Although the new Eclipse format made them stronger, Comets always adapt well and fought hard to take the 2nd quarter 8 – 5.

Normally the 3rd quarter is Comets downfall but not today.  Despite Comets throwing passes away, their defence marked well and through working together as a team again held the opposition to 5 goals. Meanwhile despite a change of tactics by Eclipse to double mark Nicky at GA , the Comets girls just worked their play round the circle and ended the quarter with an 11 -5 victory.

Changes were made to both teams in the final quarter, Anita having played well came off due to a contact lens malfunction and Jenny stepped in at WA, with Julia moving to Centre. Luckily the tall Eclipse Centre had moved on to her 3rd position of the match (desperation if you ask me) and Julia was able see her team mates. The final quarter saw another brilliant spell by the defensive trio of Pat, Mel and Player of the match Janet. Tight marking, brilliant interceptions and excellent communication meant the Eclipse shooters were held to only 3 goals. The Comets attack weathered the storm of the new GD, and  in the end the footwork mistakes of the opposition outweighed the overly ambitious and wayward passing of Comets and the tired Comets squad won the final quarter 7  - 3.
