Comets v Jeffers

Picture the scene, midday, the sun beating down on a blazing hot netball court on Costa Del Dallow Road. Comets take to the court full of bounce and confidence following their magnificent win in the first match of the season. But what happens, shock, disaster, Jeffers race off to a 4 – 0 lead. The Comets girls are a resourceful bunch though, they settled down and clambered back up the wall of deficit to end the first quarter a storming 13- 6 ahead.

More amazing play under the blistering sun from the Comets girls in the second quarter, accurate drops balls into the circle looped off the top of the outstretched 6ft Jeffers defence, to land neatly in the hands of the Comets shooters. Defensively Comets were glued to the opposition like trainers to the court and the interceptions neatly turned the ball in its path and returned it to the Comets circle.

But alas the heat had taken its toll, the Comets exited the court at half time desperate for shade and ice but there was none to be found. It was decided that the substitutes had sunbathed long enough and they were roused from their lethargy and suitably bibbed enter the court for the second half.

This proved somewhat of an undoing for the Comets girls, a new squad layout combined with the strength sapping temperatures gave the chance for Jeffers to dominate the 3rd quarter. Somehow despite the heat, Jeffers found a new burst of energy and Comets could only watch with despair as their hard won lead was reduced to a single goal.

So further changes were afoot in the final quarter, and much more fluent play from the Comets lead to a nail biting end of the game. Comets played their heart out, but finally the heat and injuries took too great a toll and with Jeffers having their best quarter of the match a demoralised Comets saw the lead change. Jeffers clawing their way to a 4 goal lead to claim the match. Player of the match for her amazing stamina and heat resistance was Centre Angela Wood.

The final score was Comets 33  Jeffers 37
